The headline number

A new AP-NORC poll found that 64% of Americans believe artificial intelligence is developing too quickly. Only 8% said it is developing too slowly, while about a quarter said the pace is about right.

The concern is not confined to one party. AP-NORC reported that 76% of Democrats and 54% of Republicans say AI is moving too fast.

What people want from government

The poll found especially broad agreement on two goals: protecting workers and keeping AI under human control. Roughly 8 in 10 adults said those should be major priorities in the government’s approach to AI.

That makes sense. For many people, the AI debate is no longer abstract. It touches jobs, privacy, children, misinformation and the basic question of who remains accountable when software makes or influences important decisions.

The political problem

Even with that concern, many Americans do not seem convinced Washington is ready. AP-NORC found that 40% trust neither major party to handle AI well.

That creates an opening—and a challenge—for policymakers. The public appears ready for guardrails, but confidence in the people writing those rules remains limited.
